Sams Creek

Friday, May 30th, 2008

John Switow’s fish is something special for sure.  I also came across this beauty at the R and R site and it is especially pertinent to TCS and me; it seems that Sams Creek has been re-opened to brook trout fishing after an extensive restoration project.  Ian and Charity even helped haul these fish to the remote creek, read all about it at www.randrflyfishing.com , just click on the fishing report.

This story is pretty neat for me as I visited the park with my folks last year and only then found out that there was a Sams Creek in the park and a Sams Gap nearby.  The family hails from down in the NC, KY, TN, VA area and it was pretty neat to see your own name on the maps.

Very cool, and may there be brookies in Sams Creek for a thousand years.

Chuck Sams on the Little River

That’s me, Chuck Sams, fishing a stretch of the Little River in The Smoky Mountains; not that far from Sams Creek.

Tennessee Tailwater

Friday, May 30th, 2008

I happened across this little gem today while surfing my usual haunts.  Ian at R and R fly fishing, check them out at www.randrflyfishing.com , happened to have a picture of a friend of TCS.  John Switow, is pictured with a beauty of a trout on one of Tennessee’s great tailwaters.  Ian reports that the fishing is excellent down there all around right now, and John’s fish shows it.  John is headed north soon to try is luck on our great rivers here in Michigan.

Good luck John!  And thanks for the encouraging words as far as TCS is concerned.

Therssen’s Fly Box

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Good news from the annals of The Cedar Sweeper.  I spoke with Chris Therssen, of the Clinton River Therssen’s, yesterday and he will be continuing to provide TCS with a fly and recipe for each month.  I am excited to see what he comes up with for June.

Also, looking ahead to June, Therssen has also committed to help out with the June promotion by tying a batch of Michigan flies.  So, don’t forget to check out the June edition for details on how to register to win.

Thanks Chris.

Jerry Dennis

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I just wanted to post a few thoughts on Jerry Dennis.  I have corresponded with Jerry for some time now; there was gap, when The Cedar Sweeper was down.  This didn’t seem to matter to Jerry (the gap in communication) once TCS came back on line.  He encouraged me from the start and was kind enought to submit to the interview in this months TCS.  Jerry has been had several books published and appeared in publications such as Gray’s Sporting Journal, Trout, and Smithsonian just to name a few.  In short, Jerry is a top notch guy and one day I hope that we can share the stream.

I also wanted to mention that Jerry is one of the best writers around.  He has mastered his chosen form, the essay, and does it better than anyone around.  I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks to Jerry.  I hope that TCS readers that don’t know Jerry will check out his work and for readers that are familiar with him that the interview gave a little insight.

Thanks a million Jerry.

PM Clean Up

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

There is one big event to report this weekend. Baldwin Bait and Tackle (BBT) will be having their spring clean up this Saturday 31-May-08. The boys at BBT promise car spotting and food in the evening. The event is BYOB but they will also supply the coolers and the ice. The details are available at www.fishbaldwin.com . It is a great way to give back to the PM.

Welcome to the Blog and a Big Weekend.

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Welcome to the TCS blog.  This is something that I tried before as part of the TCS site by just creating a page and naming it blog.  However, I have upgraded the site and with that comes the official TCS blog.  I have currently created three categories (I am sure there will be more to come) but fishing and writing are on the list first, along with “uncategorized”.  So this post falls under uncategorized as a welcome and a place to share some initial thoughts.  Check back often as I will try and posts updates whenever relevant topics come to mind.  I have a terrible memory when it comes to writing topics, so I will try to come here and put my thoughts down when they are fresh.  So, let’s try it?

I have a huge weekend coming up.  Olivia, our new baby will be christened on Sunday with a small party to follow at our home.  The upcoming event has kept me busy and I guess my frustration has showed.  I have yet to hit the river this spring as there have been several things to keep me busy; kids, TCS, day job, house, and the list goes on.  I can smell a fishing trip though …… stay tuned.
